IDT introduces RapidIO switch for 5G mobile networks
Integrated Device Technology (IDT) introduced a new generation of RapidIO switches. The devices, called RXS2448 and RXS1632, provide ultra low latency, high bandwidth and the energy efficiency required for the implementation in the 4G LTE Advanced (LTE-A) wireless infrastructure and the new 5G.
The switches of the RXS family, explains Tony Lukassen, senior product manager in IDT, address all distributed processing applications environments, such as multiprocessor ‘distributed computing’ architecture and HPC (high performance computing) systems. Target applications, confirms Lukassen, are likewise the world of Internet of Things (IoT) and the ‘fog computing’ architectures.
“Certainly, these types of devices aim to enable the IoT technology, also thanks to the scalability of the integrated switch fabric technology. These devices, and this type of fabric, will be largely used on the infrastructure side, to enable architectures ‘mobile edge computing’ (MEC) and data analysis applications in the next 5G networks.”
More and more, in fact, to perform real time activities of data analytics, these functions of information analysis are moved to the peripheral network (edge network), in order to perform the calculations locally, where the data are collected: the RXS switch respond to the design needs of the last generation of mobile infrastructure, including base stations, C-RAN components, and MEC systems.
Other applications range from the analysis of big data in data center, to the single board computer (SBC), to the switching backplane, to imaging systems, but there are also in industrial control, defense and aerospace (sonar, radar).
The RXS switches are backward compatible with existing RapidIO ecosystem, to protect previous hardware and software investments and accelerate the time-to-market. RXS2448 provides 24 ports and 48 lanes, and RXS1632 has 16 ports and 32 lanes. In both switches, each port has a capacity of 50 Gbps. The RXS2448 bandwidth capacity is up to 600 Gbps in full-duplex, while RXS1632 provides 400 Gbps. The switch ultra low-latency (100 nanosecond port-to-port) is a critical element in the analytical applications of edge and 5G systems.
The RXS switch, said Sean Fan, vice president and general manager of Interface and Connectivity Division at IDT, provides a seamless upgrade for telecom companies and OEMs, to increase interconnection bandwidth up to 250% in baseband systems.
