Geartec: big investments in new technologies

Posted 22 March 2016

From the beginning of 2016 Geartec (Legnano – MI – Italy) has adopted some new equipment specifically dedicated to micro-machining and production of polymeric high precision parts which are used in the electronics, semiconductor, medical, and in the aerospace sectors, as well as in the processing machines and in the sector of general engineering which often require very small components.

The micro-components, defined as the parts with the maximum dimension equal or smaller than 5 mm, and the micro-features, those very small elements which have to be obtained on normal dimensions parts, are usually produced in standard departments together with other machined parts, even when if they require different technology and specific know-how.
To compliment these new investments, Geartec decided to build and equip a special department dedicated to complex surface s finish machining and micromachining. This department which is separated from the rest of the machine shop where traditional processes are carried out–is climatized and not only equipped with 5 axis high speed milling machines and optical quality control equipment , but also takes advantage of being staffed with specially trained operators.

Some important sectors, such as electronics and semiconductors, telecommunications and medical instruments, face the increasing miniaturization of components with complex geometries, extremely thin wall thicknesses, very small diameters of the holes and extremely tight tolerances. “The complexity and the peculiarity of such requirements have convinced us of about the need for these investments” explained Giancarlo Piatti, the Geartec General Manager.

A careful analysis of the market, drove to equip the new Geartec micro-milling department with a 5 axis DMG Ecomill 50 milling center, provided with high-speed spindle and specially equipped for high precision machining. For metrological inspection, which must be carried out with optical instrumentation, the company choose a Vision measuring microscope capable to verify both the dimensions and the surfaces of micro components.

“In this way we obtained two results: we can offer an higher guarantee of compliance and accuracy to our customers and achieve a simplification and truly precise measurement of the work of our quality inspectors” concluded Piatti

Geartec has already planned, over the next two years, new investments in machines and equipments to increase the future capacity of the new micro-machining department.
