Development Tools – Answers provided by Juhapekka Niemi, vice president of sales and marketing Digia Qt
EONEWS: What are your opinions regarding the major trends for this market (slowing, growing, booming…)?
NIEMI: We are definitely seeing a booming market for embedded devices with graphical user interfaces. Increasingly, a device´s value will be judged by the user experience (UX). Existing implementations in the market have already set the bar high, so there is no room for sub-par solutions. Today’s user experience must be fluid and high performance, have smooth transitions and 3D capabilities, and most of all, must be supported by tools for easy and fast solution creation.
EONEWS: What are the key strategies adopted by your company in the short/medium period to address (or to better address) the needs of the market?
NIEMI: Qt is well positioned to grow within the embedded market because it offers a powerful solution to create compelling user experiences for a variety of different environments. Qt has native C++ and HTML5 capabilities, and also a unique way to create hybrid solutions that will help to future proof applications.
Recognising the needs of embedded developers, Digia has just launched the Qt Enterprise Embedded solution, which dramatically cuts the time required to get started with embedded development.
EONEWS: What are you doing in order to implement your strategies (partnership/agreements, new acquisitions, investments in activities like R&D, people….)?
NIEMI: Digia is working with various OS vendors (RTOS, eLinux and Android) and SoC makers to enable the adoption of Qt in as many industries as possible. In addition, Digia is investing in R&D to maintain its technical leadership position, as evidenced by our recent announcement on adopting the Chrome project based HTML5 implementation.
EONEWS: What are the most important application?
NIEMI: Qt is widely used in more than 70 industries, where the primary application is the creation of a total user experience.
EONEWS: Which are the key factors that set your company apart from the competition?
NIEMI: Qt is the best cross-platform application development technology available in today´s market. Digia has an extensive partner network and a global presence to support customers in their projects.
EONEWS: And in the middle/long term (if you have a crystal ball!)?
NIEMI: In the mid term, the application ecosystems visible today in the mobile industry will be deployed to the embedded industries. Qt is well positioned for this transition because it is used in the mobile industry already, has over 500,000 developers globally, and is actively used in embedded products today. Qt is the natural technology to bridge all these product segments together.
Another current trend is that the same development tools need to extend across various product segments, and the applications need to work across many devices. Consequently, developers are seeking tools that will help them focus on the applications and user experience, and not on porting applications from one platform to another.
