Avnet Embedded signs a distribution agreement with VMware

Posted 19 September 2016

Avnet Embedded has signed a global distribution agreement with VMware, specializing in virtualisation and cloud infrastructure software. The agreement means that Avnet Embedded EMEA customers operating in many different markets such as industrial control and automation, healthcare equipment and electronic point of sale (EPOS) retail applications, can gain access to VMware’s extensive portfolio of virtualisation and cloud computing solutions.

Virtualisation enables the creation of virtual machines, dramatically reducing hardware costs, enabling highly efficient computing capability, and increasing system and application uptime. The concept essentially separates software applications from the underlying hardware platform and enables multiple operating systems and applications to run upon the same hardware server and share system resources including compute, storage and networking functionality.

A key product in the VMware portfolio is VMware vSphere 6, the latest edition of the industry-leading virtualisation software for public and private hybrid cloud solutions and the software-defined data center. The latest version of VMware vSphere offers more than 650 new features and provides customers with a highly available and resilient cloud infrastructure to run, protect and manage any application.

In addition, also available is vSphere with Operations Management that targets many embedded industries, and delivers an integrated virtualisation platform designed to optimise operations with automated management and intelligent insight.

“In this era of cloud computing, big data and increasingly connected devices in the Internet of Things, virtualisation is becoming an important technology for embedded applications across a range of industries,” said Nick Donaldson, marketing director, software at Avnet Embedded EMEA. “VMware is the world’s leading source of virtualisation software, and their solutions now form a core part of our offerings to deliver complete system solutions to our customers enabling them to reduce IT costs and realise higher efficiencies”.

“Our collaboration with Avnet Embedded is important to help meet the needs of equipment manufacturers and solution providers looking to realise the benefits offered by virtualisation in embedded industries,” said Bernie Mills, senior director, Embedded OEMs, VMware. “With this new agreement, a wide range of Avnet Embedded EMEA customers can gain access to our extensive portfolio of virtualisation and cloud computing technologies.”
